Beaches of Longboat Key


Beer Can Island, is not an actual island, but a striking sandbar. Located on the northern end of Longboat Key, the public beach offers majestically clear water. With public parking available, you can also arrive by boat, or foot during low tide from Neptune Avenue, Beach or Mayfield Street. Ideal for those in search of solitude, this is also a quiet beach favorite for fishing, beach picnics, sunset strolls and the occasional fashion shoot.

Make sure to follow the rules of the locals: Fish in the Pass; Wave at the Boats, and don’t forget the Beer.


Located on the north end of Longboat Key, Whitney Beach offers well marked access points and public parking. There are no lifeguards, facilities or amenities. This quiet beach is perfect for walking and shelling, with sea oats that grace the sands and a treasure trove of sand dollars. Watch the boats travel through Longboat Pass, and always stay for the stunning sunset at days’ end.

Just across the street, a prolific peacock population has called the vintage neighborhood of Longbeach Village home for the past 60 years.


Extending from about the 2800 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive north, eight public access points offer limited parking, so arrive early on peak days.  There are no lifeguards or public facilities.
